Lectures:

Mondays and Wednesdays, 2:30 - 4:00 PM, in Southam 314.

Office hours:

My office is 4269 in the Herzberg Building. My office hours for the fall term will be announced at the start of the term.

Topics:

First-order PDEs. Classification of second-order linear PDEs; the diffusion equation, wave equation and Laplace's equation. Separation of variables. Fourier and Laplace transform methods for the solution of initial/boundary value problems. Green's functions.

Prerequisites:

The prerequisites for this course are MATH 3057 (Functions of a Complex Variable) AND either one or both of MATH 3008 (Ordinary Differential Equations) and MATH 3705 (Mathematical Methods), or permission of the School, i.e., if you do not have the above-stated prerequisites and you wish to take the course, you need to have my permission before you register for the course.

Grading scheme:

There will be assignments, a midterm in-class exam and an end-of-term formally-scheduled exam.
